London: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that a security incident at RAF Fairford, a military air base in England hosting US troops, was “almost certainly” directed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

"But I can confirm our assessment that it is highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard," Burnham said.

Burnham has previously said there are strong indications Iran was linked to the apparent plan to attack RAF Fairford last month. Seven men have been arrested and released on bail as counterterror police investigate.

"We will not tolerate these threats on our soil. We will crack down on Iran's use of criminal networks using our full range of powers to target them and their funding streams, and we will bring further sanctions to restrict the capacity of Iran and the IRGC to do us harm," the prime minister said.

On Monday, the British government summoned the Iranian ambassador to express displeasure at “Iran's continued attempts to undermine the security of the United Kingdom and international partners through its criminal networks, proxy groups and state-backed malign activity.”
