Following mass protest over Spain's housing crisis on Monday, clashes erupted in central Barcelona.

Police blocked demonstrators from advancing towards the Barcelona Stock Exchange where tensions escalated after the march had officially ended. Some protesters threw objects at officers, and police retaliated.

Confrontations between police and demonstrators continued for several hours in the city centre as security forces maintained a heavy presence in the area.

In light of the mounting housing crisis, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had called for snap elections on Monday. The voting will take place on November 29.
