US President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday for a closely watched meeting. Both presidents discussed their positions on trade, the war in Iran, AI, and Taiwan.

During the talks, Trump hailed the relationship and cooperation between the two countries during World War II.
Regarding the trade war, Xi urged communication and cooperation with a level of sincerity. After the sanctions on Russia, China was heavily affected, along with countries like India. But the US lowered tariffs on China in exchange for easing restrictions on rare earth minerals. The trade truce reached last year has been extended between the US and China until January 10 next year. Xi also said that the gates of China are open to American companie to want to invest in China and expects the same from the US for Chinese industries.

Even though no big deal was announced, AI was one of the topics discussed by both leaders. Trump called for “super-intelligence”, while Xi’s response on AI was that it must remain under human control.
Taiwan, where both countries have strategic interests, was also discussed. No major deal was announced during the talks; instead, both leaders stressed cooperation between the US and China.
Iran and the Strait of Hormuz were also part of the conversation, with China maintaining close ties with Iran.
Xi said China is willing to step up counter-narcotics and law-enforcement cooperation. He said competition between the two countries must be healthy and called for no conflict between the nations. He also urged mechanisms to improve crisis communication and prevent conflicts.
He also invited 100,000 young Americans to China to study for five years. It is the first time in 11 years that a Chinese leader has visited the US.
