Poland: A stabbing at a Catholic convent in south-eastern Poland on Thursday left one person dead and four others wounded, authorities said. Police detained a suspect.
Police said they were alerted to the stabbing on the grounds of the Benedictine Abbey in Jarosław at around 9.30 a.m. Four men and a woman were stabbed.
The victims were taken to a hospital, with three of the men suffering serious injuries. Police later said that one of the men had died, Polish news agency PAP reported.
Police, who said they had been alerted to a stabbing by a Ukrainian citizen, said a 31-year-old foreign national was detained as a suspect at the scene. They were investigating what exactly happened and what the motive might have been.
The attack happened at a Benedictine Sisters monastery on the grounds of the abbey, local media reported.
"I only heard that Father Marek is in serious condition, that priest Stanislaw suffered a lung injury, because, from what I gather, the incident happened after the priest stepped out of the confessional," Sister Barbara Dendor said.
Police said they were at the scene investigating the incident.
