The United Nations is preparing to open the 81st session of its General Assembly in New York, where world leaders are expected to discuss conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, as well as the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
The General Debate will run from September 22 to September 26 and resume on September 28 under the theme, "Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all."
Delegates, journalists and officials arrived at UN headquarters on Monday ahead of the gathering, one of the world's largest annual diplomatic meetings. More than 100 heads of state and government are expected to take part in the high-level discussions.
The meetings come at a time of mounting geopolitical tensions, while the United Nations faces growing financial pressures and questions about its future direction as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres prepares to leave office at the end of 2026.
