Tirana, Albania: A few thousand Albanians took to the streets of Tirana on Monday night (September 7) to protest a development planned by a company linked to Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, on an environmentally sensitive part of the Adriatic coast.
Protesters gathered outside the office of Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama, holding cardboard flamingos and signs that read 'Albania is not for sale' and 'Edi Rama resign!'
They created a human chain and surrounded the office of Prime Minister Rama. Kushner's investment firm Affinity Partners is involved in the €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) project near the Vjosa-Narta protected area, and another one on nearby Sazan Island. Together, the projects are worth up to €5 billion, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has said.
Environmentalists oppose the plan, which they say would impact several hundred hectares of pristine beaches.
Developers say they will progress responsibly.
Kushner announced plans to build the resort in 2024 as part of a wider investment that also included a former army headquarters in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Last year, he dropped the Serbia project after street protests against it.
