The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 675 on Saturday, as authorities warned of fresh rainfall and thunderstorms in flood-affected areas, threatening to disrupt ongoing search and rescue operations.

While nearly 2,500 people have been evacuated, nearly 3,000 people remain missing, including about 2,426 in Nepal and at least 554 in Tibet's Gyirong County.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the country, including the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Meteorologists warned that rainfall in the Bhotekoshi flood-affected area of Rasuwa could affect rescue operations.

A massive torrent of water, mud and debris swept through central Nepal on Wednesday after an ice-rock avalanche following a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastating towns and villages, washing away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges, and damaging hydropower projects.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said the situation was being closely monitored and the country remained on high alert. Nepal has also sought foreign technical assistance for complex rescue operations.

Rescuers continued operations amid rising water levels in the Bhotekoshi River, while Chinese authorities have warned that a new barrier lake upstream in Tibet could breach and trigger another flood surge downstream.
