Washington: A new application form for green card will come into effect next month and any submissions made using the older versions will be rejected after September 18, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has said.

The new Form I-485 to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status replaces the January 20, 2025 edition and aligns with the new public charge rules that come into effect from September 18, said the USCIS, operating under the Department of Homeland Security.

The USCIS will reject the January 20, 2025 edition of Form I-485 if it is postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18.

The agency is providing a preview version of the new edition of Form I-485 and its instructions because there is no grace period for accepting the revised edition.

It has made it clear to applicants not to file the revised edition of Form I-485 before September 18.

Earlier, the Trump administration expanded the definition of ‘public charge’ to deny immigration applications of those availing benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps or any subsistence aid from the government.

The new ‘public charge' rules come into effect on September 18.
