Two migratory birds that were brought into Esperance Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary tested positive to the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu in Western Australia.
A migratory seabird known as a northern giant petrel found sick on a remote beach tested positive, Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said on Monday, after a brown skua case on Saturday.
In vision obtained by Reuters, the brown skua could be seen at the Esperance Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary after it was brought in from Cape Le Grand National Park beach while the northern giant petrel was brought in from Wylie Bay beach
The brown skua died on June 15.
Until now, Australia had been the only continent without a confirmed mainland case, though the virus was detected in late 2025 on the sub-Antarctic territory of Heard Island.
