West-Asia war LIVE: Iran closes Strait of Hormuz over ceasefire violations, Iranian news agency
Iran's top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said the Strait of Hormuz would be closed to vessel traffic, citing alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement by the U.S and Israel, Iran's Mehr state news agency reported.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned ships not to approach the waterway, a vital conduit for global oil and gas supplies, citing what it called Israeli "crimes" in Lebanon and a U.S. violation of commitments to establish a ceasefire.
The top military command said that the closure was the "first step" in response to what it described as breaches of commitments and warned that further measures would be taken if "aggression" continued.
Iran's Fars news agency reported the foreign ministry spokesperson as saying that the US is obligated to force Israel to stop attacking Lebanon and also that Iran adhered to its commitments under the ceasefire agreement.
However, Fox News reported US Vice-President J D Vance as saying that there is no evidence for the closure of the Strait, through which one-fifth of the global oil trade transits.
