Jakarta: An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Tuesday, the nation's geophysics agency BMKG said.
The epicentre has been recorded at about 42 kilometres to the southeast of the town of Palu at a depth of 10 km.
The initial temblor caused strong shaking lasting more than a minute. BMKG clarified that there is no tsunami risk. No information on damage or casualties was immediately available.
Indonesia is crossed by several seismic faults, and earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.

Earlier, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck southern Philippines on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, a week after another quake in the region left at least 65 people dead.
