Nagoya: With a best effort of 15.66m, India's Suvarna Raj won the gold medal in the women's F54 discus throw event at the Asian Para Games, securing the country’s first gold haul of the day on Thursday.

Suvarna delivered a consistent performance, recording four throws beyond the 15-metre mark in her six attempts.

Her gold-medal-winning effort came in her fifth attempt, helping her finish at the top of the podium and add another gold to India’s medal tally at the continental para-sporting event.

Iran's Shahla Hadidi finished second with 15.45m, while Vietnam's Thi Ngoc Thuy Nguyen took bronze with 14.65m.

Suvarna’s victory marked a strong start to the day for the Indian contingent as the country’s athletes continued their campaign at the Asian Para Games. Her medal marked India’s 15th gold at the Games.

The F54 classification is for seated field athletes with impairments affecting trunk and lower-limb function, who compete from a throwing chair.

Athletes use their upper-body strength and arm movement to generate power, with limited trunk control affecting their throwing technique.
