Kerala rain HIGHLIGHTS: CM to visit Pathanamthitta tomorrow
Kerala remains on high alert as heavy rainfall continues to lash several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 12 districts, except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, forecasting heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad,Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kasaragod and Kannur. While Kannur has declared holidays only in three taluks, Iritty, Thaliparamba and Payyanur, and Wayanad has declared holidays only in schools working as temporary relief camps.
Low-lying areas in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kozhikode have remained inundated since Saturday due to incessant rain.
The Pathanamthitta district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant as one shutter of the Moozhiyar Dam opened on Monday.
According to officials, floodwaters in Aranmula, one of the worst-affected areas in the district, are expected to recede within the next two days.
Meanwhile, death toll in rain-related accidents touched 18 in the state on Monday.

KSEB faces a whopping loss of ₹25.3 crores
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) faced a loss of ₹25.3 crores due to the recent floods. According to reports, 2892 electric transformers got damaged, 349 high tension electric posts and 2599 low tension electric posts got destroyed. 6,56,770 consumers faced disruptions in power supply. Pathanamthitta and Kannur are the two districts which faced the most loss.

Chief Minister to visit Pathanamthitta
According to reports, Chief Minister VD Satheesan will visit Pathanamthitta tomorrow amid the ongoing flood in the region. Satheesan will reportedly visit areas which were worst hit by the flood in the district and will also visit relief camps in the region to ensure support. Ranny, a taluk in Pathanamthitta was one of the most affected areas in Kerala.

The Kerala state-level public recruitment Public Service Commission (PSC) exam, scheduled to be conducted on 4,5,6,10 of this month, has been postponed due to heavy rain. The revised dates will be announced later.

Pathanamthitta saw the most rainfall; reports
One of the worst-hit districts in the Kerala floods is Pathanamthitta. According to the latest report from the Central Meteorological Department, the district witnessed five times more rain than average. The report says the rainfall was reported to be above 250mm compared to the usual 40mm.

Educational institutions in four districts declare holiday
Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Idukki and Malappuram districts decalre holiday for schools and other educational institutions amid the ongoing weather catastrophe. Kannur district also announced holiday but only in Thaliparamba, Payyanur and Iritty taluks. Professional colleges are exempted from the holiday in Kannur. Wayanad have also declared a holiday for schools running as relief camps.

One of the individual from the flood rescue team crew, Rajesh has gone missing during the rescue efforts. He was carrying out the mission in Cherupuzha, Kannur. Benny, one of the person rescued by Rajesh told the reporters he is praying for the return of Rajesh and is struggling to sleep after the news of his disappearance.

Over 11,000 people in 316 relief camps
As of 9 a.m. on Monday, 316 relief camps were functioning across the state, sheltering 11,018 people displaced by the rain and flooding, the chief minister told a press conference after reviewing the flood situation in the state with top officials here.
He said three deaths were reported from Kottayam district, including two people in the Poonjar Assembly constituency and a child who drowned after falling into a water tank.
Ernakulam reported two deaths, while one person each died in Idukki and Muvattupuzha. Two people died in Kollam, four in Malappuram, one in Kannur and one in Kozhikode.
Seven people are still missing. Two people are missing in Kollam, two in Kannur, one in Malappuram and one each in Idukki and Muvattupuzha, Satheesan said. -
More NDRF teams will be deployed in Kerala
"An NDRF team has been deployed to Pathanamthitta, while two teams are currently stationed in Kottayam. Two additional NDRF teams have been sought from Arakkonam, and they can be dispatched whenever required. Helicopters have also arrived. Instructions have been given to deploy ITBP personnel in Alappuzha if necessary. Similarly, Defence Security Corps personnel have been directed to be deployed in Kannur and Wayanad if required," said CM VD Satheesan.

165 hectares agricultural fields hit
According to the initial data, 165 hectares of agricultural fields were hit by the heavy rain triggered landslides and floods in various parts of Kerala. The CM said that a total of 3696 farmers are affected.

₹12 lakh for those who lost houses in landslides
The Kerala CM announced that the state government would give ₹12 lakh for those who lost houses in the landslides. The fund is given for purchasing land and constructing house. A compensation of ₹6 lakh will be given to those who need to repair their houses.

₹8 lakh ex gratia for kin of deceased, ₹10,000 for funeral
VD Satheesan announced an ex-gratia of ₹8 lakh for the families of people who were killed in the rain-related accidents. He added than an immediate compensation of ₹10,000 will be given for the funeral.

15 killed, 7 missing: Chief Minister
Chief Minister VD Satheesan said that the state recorded 15 deaths in rain related accidents. He added that seven people went missing. According to him, 316 relief camps were opened in the state. He asserted that rescue and relief efforts are being conducted with the co-ordination of all departments.

Ministers visit flood-hit Aranmula in Pathanamthitta
Kerala minister AP Anil Kumar, Adv Abin Varkey and PC Vishnunadh visited flood-hit Aranmula on Monday. Anil Kumar urged people to shift to safe locations and cooperate with the local administration's rescue efforts. According to experts, the water level is likely to rise in Aranmula as more dams are being opened.

Panakkad mudslide: Malappuram municipality says illegal construction works led to mishap
Malappuram municipal chairperson Rinisha told Reporter TV that the civic body didn't approve the construction works that led to a massive mudslide at Panakkad near Nadukani ghat road. At the same time, she confirmed that building permission was given. The district collector and geology department officials will visit the spot soon.

Moozhiyar dam shutters raised by 15 cm
The district authorities said that one shutter of Moozhiyar dam was raised by 15 cm after the water level touched 190 metres. The water is being released to the Kakkattar river. The authority asked the people living close to riverbanks and low-lying areas to stay vigilant. People are restricted from venturing into the waterbodies.

Mudslide hits Nadukani Ghat Road in Malappuram, traffic disrupted
Traffic was disrupted on the Nadukani Ghat Road at Panankkad in Malappuram district after a mudslide blocked the route on Monday.
Visuals aired by news channels showed trees being uprooted and crashing onto the road along with a massive heap of mud, bringing traffic to a halt.
The incident triggered panic among local residents. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore traffic.
Residents alleged that mining activities using excavators on a private land led to the mudslide.

Over 100 houses flooded in Pathanamthitta's Thiruvalla
Over 100 houses were inundated at Pathanamthitta's Thiruvalla after Manimalayar river started to overflow amid heavy rain. As per reports, families are stranded in the flooded houses. It is learnt that people sought shelter on the first floor and terrace of the houses. Efforts are on to shift the people from the houses, said MLA Varghese Mammen.
