Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam improved further on Sunday, though more than 5.24 lakh people remain affected across five districts, while two more fatalities pushed this year's flood death toll to 68, an official bulletin said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5,24,700 people have been affected in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.
Two more people lost their lives during the last 24 hours after drowning in floodwaters in Charaideo district, the bulletin issued late on Sunday said.
Charaideo is the worst-affected district, with nearly 1.9 lakh people impacted, followed by Sivasagar (more than 1.5 lakh) and Jorhat (around 1.4 lakh).
The flood situation improved from Saturday, when nearly 6.55 lakh people were affected across six districts.
The ASDMA said the administration has been operating 354 relief camps and aid distribution centres across four districts, providing shelter to 37,724 displaced people.
Multiple agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and the police, have rescued several people from different parts of Upper Assam, it said.
At present, 763 villages remain inundated, while 48,742.09 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state.
Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also suffered damage in several districts, the bulletin stated.
The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger level, the ASDMA said.
The authority added that 88,240 domestic animals and poultry have also been affected by the flooding across Assam.
