New Delhi: Ravneet Singh Bittu resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on Friday following the expiry of his Rajya Sabha term, with President Droupadi Murmu accepting his resignation with immediate effect.

According to an official statement, the President accepted Bittu's resignation from his position as Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Murmu is currently on a three-nation state visit abroad.

Bittu, who had served in the Union Council of Ministers since 2024, expressed gratitude to the President and the Prime Minister for the opportunity to serve in the government.

In a post on X, he said it had been an honour to serve the people of India, particularly Punjab, and affirmed that he remained committed to public service, nationalism and the vision of a Viksit Bharat under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.

"I express my heartfelt gratitude to Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji and Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the nation as Minister of State in the Government of India. It has been an honour to serve the people of India, especially my beloved Punjab. I remain committed to the ideals of service, nationalism, and the vision of a Viksit Bharat under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji. My journey of public service continues with renewed dedication," Bittu said.

A grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Bittu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024 after leaving the Congress. He unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections before being nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan to fill the remainder of a vacant term following the resignation of Congress leader K C Venugopal.

Political observers expect Bittu to focus on preparations for the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled next year.
