   Wangchuk needs urgent therapy, family declining treatment despite counselling: Safdarjung Hospital

   Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a 21-day hunger strike, is showing signs of dehydration and urgently requires fluid and electrolyte therapy to prevent potentially serious complications, even as he and his family declined the recommended treatment despite repeated counselling, Safdarjung Hospital authorities said on Saturday.

   Wangchuk remains conscious and haemodynamically stable, with his pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation currently within normal limits, the hospital said in a statement issued around 9 p.m.

   However, it said his prolonged fast has led to clinical signs of dehydration, making immediate oral or intravenous fluid and electrolyte therapy medically necessary.

   Left parties condemn Wangchuk's removal

   Left parties on Saturday condemned the police action against activist Sonam Wangchuk and protesters at Jantar Mantar, and accused India government of suppressing democratic dissent instead of addressing the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, while extending support to the continuing student-led agitation.

   Their comments came after educator and climate activist Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 21 days, was forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar earlier in the day by the Delhi Police and whisked away to Safdarjung Hospital.

   Wangchuk refuses IV fluids, medication; doctors urge him to accept treatment

   Activist Sonam Wangchuk who was taken to Safdarjung Hospital after a 20-day hunger strike has refused intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and other medications despite signs of dehydration and metabolic abnormalities, hospital authorities said on Saturday.

   He is being continuously monitored and counselled to accept treatment in the interest of his health, they said.

   Wangchuk, 59, was brought to the hospital by Delhi Police and admitted at 7:40 am with a history of fasting from solid food for 20 days and generalised weakness. There is no history of fainting attacks, the hospital said in health bulletin.

   'Let his life be saved': Ex-CJI Balakrishnan on Sonam Wangchuk

   Hours after activist Sonam Wangchuk was whisked to a hospital here on Saturday, on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike in Delhi, former Chief Justice of India, Justice K G Balakrishnan said, "Let his life be saved".

   He made the brief comment on his condition during an interaction with PTI Videos on the sidelines of an event in Delhi.

   'How can govt be so merciless towards students? They are Indians, not Pakistanis': CJP founder's father

   Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke's father on Saturday expressed concern over his son sitting on an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, and asked how the government could be so "merciless" to the students who are Indian nationals, and not Pakistanis.

   Claiming that students are on indefinite hunger strikes in various parts of the country, Bhagwan Dipke asked whether the government is waiting for someone to die. He accused the government of not listening to demands raised by students and threatened to join his son's indefinite fast.

   Rahul Gandhi slams Wangchuk's removal from Jantar Mantar

   Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the "removal" of activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar while he was on a non-violent hunger strike is "wrong" and alleged that the core tenets of the government are "Asatya and Hinsa (falsehood and violence)".

   The party criticised the police action at Jantar Mantar, following which Wangchuk was shifted, describing it as a "blot" on the country's democracy and the Constitution.

   In a post on X, Gandhi said the core tenets of the Narendra Modi government are "Asatya and Hinsa".

   Woman hurls ink-like liquid at CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke

   A woman hurled an ink-like liquid at Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke while he was addressing a gathering, hours after the protest site saw a police operation to shift activist Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital.

   

   The incident briefly disrupted the programme as supporters rushed towards the stage, triggering commotion.

   The woman's identity and the motive behind the act were not immediately known. However, police sources said that she has been detained. Further investigation into the matter is underway, police said.

    Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of Sonam Wangchuk, writes to Safdarjung hospital

    Shortly after his hospitalisation, Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, asked the hospital not to administer any treatment without her consent and sought his discharge, alleging a lack of transparency in his medical care.

    In two letters to the Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Angmo directed that no oral or intravenous medicine or fluid be administered to Wangchuk without her consent and sought copies of all medical reports.

    

    In a separate communication, she requested that he be discharged so he could be shifted to a medical facility of the family's choice, citing "lack of transparency" and loss of confidence in the hospital.

    CJP calls for resignation of PM Modi

    The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resignation, intensifying its protest hours after police removed activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar, where he had been on an indefinite hunger strike.

    The party declared that supporters of the youth movement would go ahead with the Parliament march scheduled for July 20. Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP founder who began an indefinite hunger strike following Wangchuk's detention, urged supporters to join the march.

    "Until now, I was demanding Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation, but after this despicable act, we will now demand the resignation of Narendra Modi," Dipke said while addressing supporters at Jantar Mantar. He was seen breaking into tears during the protest.

    Security tightened at Jantar Mantar

    Security was stepped up in and around Jantar Mantar and across parts of the New Delhi district on Saturday after activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose health deteriorated during a 20-day hunger strike, was shifted to a hospital following a brief commotion during the exercise, police said.

    Heavy deployment of Delhi Police personnel and paramilitary forces has been made at Jantar Mantar and nearby areas to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident, they said. Barricades have been erected and security personnel positioned at key points to regulate the movement of protesters and visitors.

    Dipke starts indefinite hunger strike

    CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday announced that he had begun an indefinite hunger strike shortly after activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted by the Delhi Police from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Safdarjung Hospital.

    "I am commencing my indefinite hunger strike from today. I appeal to everyone not to back down; this movement will only grow bigger. They have made a grave mistake. I urge everyone to come to Jantar Mantar. Our movement will continue from here, and we will proceed with our march scheduled for July 20," Dipke said.

    Protesters subjected to police crackdown: Dipke

    Soon after the police removed Wangchuk to a hospital, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke alleged that the protesters were subjected to a police crackdown.

    "I have been beaten up and put under detention by Delhi Police," Dipke said in a post on X.

    Sonam Wangchuk shifted to hospital by Delhi Police

    Activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a government hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, with the police citing medical advice and directions of the Delhi High Court. In a statement, Delhi Police said Wangchuk was shifted for "essential medical care" following expert medical advice and in compliance with the high court's orders.
