The Supreme Court has stayed a Madras High Court order banning cow slaughter in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The stay was issued by a bench comprising of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on a Special Leave Petition moved by the Tamil Nadu government against the blanket ban ordered by the High Court.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-government moved the Supreme Court on July 1 against the Madras High Court order.

In a May 27 order, the Madras High Court had directed state authorities to ensure that no cow or calf was slaughtered on Bakrid 'or on any other day'.
The order was passed by a division bench of Justices G R Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayanan while hearing a petition on the alleged illegal slaughter of cows in public spaces.
The petition was filed by Surya, the state general secretary of the Indu Makkal Katchi.
Even though the petitioner sought the ban on cow slaughter in public places, the High Court passed an order directing a blanket ban, prompting the state government to move the Supreme Court.
