Mumbai: As monsoon activity intensified across India, flash floods, waterlogging and winds have continued to affect normal lives in various parts of the country. Deaths are also reported in rain-related accidents.
Train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune route were suspended early Monday after heavy rains triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section, officials said.
The authorities have declared a holiday for all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar on Monday as heavy downpours continue to lash the regions. In Mumbai, where the India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’, the decision was taken keeping students’ safety in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a release on Sunday evening.
Besides heavy rainfall, the IMD has also forecast gusty winds in the metropolis.

Heavy rain pounds Chhattisgarh; rivers in spate, IMD warns of more showers
Heavy rains battered Chhattisgarh for the third consecutive day on Monday, submerging low-lying areas and disrupting traffic, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of extremely heavy rainfall across the state over the next 24 hours.
Several rivers, including the Shivnath and Kharun, are in spate, forcing the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to remain on high alert following multiple operations to rescue stranded persons.
The rains, which have been pounding the state since Saturday evening, have hit normal life in Raipur, Durg, Bhilai, Dhamtari, Gariaband, and other cities, where several residential colonies and roads remained waterlogged.
In Raipur, water entered houses in the low-lying areas of Tatibandh, Professor Colony, Parshuram Nagar and Fafadih, turning roads into ponds and partially submerging vehicles.
Similarly, in neighbouring cities of Durg and Bhilai, heavy waterlogging caused traffic delays, with police issuing specific advisories for commuters navigating the Raipur-Durg National Highway near the Kumhari overbridge.
Officials said the Shivnath River has crossed danger levels, spilling over the Mahamara anicut by nearly four feet.

Odisha on alert, schools closed in some districts
Odisha government has put the entire state on alert as incessant rain continued for the third consecutive day on Monday, even as the IMD forecast more downpour till July 7, officials said.
Several district administrations declared all educational institutions closed in view of the heavy rainfall.
According to the revenue department, schools and colleges remained shut in Cuttack, Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Bargarh districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘orange’ warning (be prepared to take action) of heavy to very heavy rainfall for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada and Bolangir districts during the day.
It also issued a ‘yellow’ warning (be alert) of heavy rainfall for Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and Nayagarh districts.

BMC asks builders to suspend hazardous constructions
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) directed developers and contractors to suspend hazardous construction activities and ensure strict safety measures at all project sites, following a 'red' alert for extremely heavy rains and strong winds.
Compliance with the advisory is mandatory, the BMC said, stressing that the safety of workers, neighbouring residents and the general public is of paramount importance.
In an advisory issued to developers, architects, licensed surveyors, contractors, project managers and site engineers, the civic body asked them to inspect scaffolding, tower cranes, material hoists, safety nets, formwork, tin sheets and other temporary structures to ensure they are stable and securely fastened.

Flashfloods block Doda-Kishtwar highway in Jammu
Flash floods triggered by incessant overnight rainfall damaged the Doda-Kishtwar highway on Monday, disrupted vehicular traffic and buried several vehicles near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project in the hilly districts of Doda and Kishtwar.
Huge quantities of mud, boulders and debris was deposited on the highway following the flash floods.
Officials said that a portion of the highway was damaged, forcing the suspension of traffic. Several vehicles parked along the roadside at Prem Nagar were trapped in the flood debris. However, no loss of life or injuries were reported, they said.
Road clearance and restoration work has been launched by authorities, while commuters have been advised to avoid the highway and follow official traffic advisories until the route is reopened.

Half-day for semi-govt offices in Mumbai; pvt firms asked to allow work from home
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Monday advised private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home and announced a half-day for non-essential and semi-government offices in view of the heavy rains, officials said.
According to the advisory issued by the SDMA on X, private establishments have been asked to permit employees to work from home wherever feasible, while employees of government and semi-government offices, except those engaged in essential services, have been granted a half-day after noon.
Authorities also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors unless essential, and follow official advisories as heavy rain continued to affect normal life in Mumbai and adjoining areas.

Three feared trapped as landslide buries house in Pune
Three members of a family were feared trapped after their house was buried in a landslide in Maharashtra's Pune district in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The incident occurred at Patan village in Maval tehsil, they said, adding that a rescue operation was underway.
"Due to heavy rainfall, three landslides occurred in a remote village in Maval. In one of the incidents, a house was buried under the debris. It is suspected that three persons were inside the house when the landslide occurred in the early hours of Monday," Deputy Superintendent of Police (Lonavala division), Gajanan Tompe said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and local teams were carrying out the rescue operation, he said.

BMC urges people to exercise caution
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also appealed to residents to avoid venturing out for non-essential work and to maintain a safe distance from trees, dilapidated buildings, hoardings, electric poles and other vulnerable structures.
It advised people not to park vehicles under trees and to stay away from beaches and waterlogged areas as a precautionary measure.
Nearly 15,000 officials and employees of the BMC and other government agencies have been deployed on the ground across the city, while senior officials are continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating response measures, the BMC said.
It asked people not to believe rumours and to rely only on official advisories issued by the administration and disaster management authorities.
The BMC also urged people to strictly follow safety guidelines issued from time to time and contact its helpline, 1916, for immediate assistance in the event of any emergency.

Incessant rain likely in Mumbai: IMD
The IMD warned that intense rainfall could inundate low-lying and urban areas, trigger flash floods and riverine flooding in some catchments, and cause water to flow over roads and bridges in Mumbai. The department also cautioned that weak trees could be uprooted, old and poorly maintained structures could collapse, and landslides, mudslides and rock falls could occur in vulnerable areas.

Pune-Mumbai carriageway traffic diverted after landslide
Traffic on the Pune to Mumbai carriageway of the Khopoli-Kusgaon ‘Missing Link’ alignment was diverted early Monday following a landslide near the exit of Tunnel 2 amid heavy rains, officials said.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link, opened two months ago, is a 13-km bypass that cuts through the Sahyadri mountains, reducing travel distance by 6 km and shaving 25 to 30 minutes off the commute.
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRDC) said a traffic diversion has been in place since 4 am on Monday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of commuters.

Trains cancelled
Several trains, including the CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express and Dhule Express were cancelled following the landslides.
Additional services, including the Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express and other trains, were also cancelled, while several long-distance trains were diverted, short-terminated, short-originated or rescheduled, officials said.
Railway authorities said restoration work was underway and advised passengers to check the latest train status before commencing their journey.
To assist passengers, Central Railway has set up helplines at major stations. The helpline numbers are: CSMT (022-22694040), Thane (9321336747), Lonavala (8356854238) and Dadar (9136452387). Passengers have been requested to use these numbers for real-time updates and travel-related information.

Landslides in Karjat-Lonavala section, train services suspended
Train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune route were suspended early Monday after heavy rains triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section, officials said.
A landslide occurred near Thakurwadi in the ghat section, Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, told PTI. Another landslide was reported on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3.05 am, he added.
Due to the landslides, all the three railway lines have been affected, forcing Central Railway to cancel, divert and regulate several long-distance trains, Nila said.

Six killed, one injured in chawl collapse in Mumbai's Mankhurd
At least six persons were killed and one sustained injuries when a three-storey chawl (row tenement) collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area amid heavy rains on Sunday night, officials said.
Rescue personnel conduct rescue operation after a ground-plus-three-storey building partially collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd in Mumbai As per officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), four women and a man were “brought dead” to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital. Another man was declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital.
One injured man is being treated at the BMC-run Rajawadi, they said.

Four-five persons feared trapped as portion of 'chawl' collapses in Mumbai
Four to five persons are feared trapped after a ground-plus-three-storey 'chawl' partially collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area on Sunday night amid heavy rains, civic officials said. The incident occurred at Chawl No 5 in Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir, at around 8.30 pm, they said.
As per preliminary information, two to three tenements forming part of the ground-plus-three-storey structure caved in, prompting a rescue operation by personnel from Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), police, BMC ward office and '108' ambulance services, the officials said.

14 vehicles damaged after compound wall collapses in Pune
At least 14 vehicles were damaged after the compound wall of a residential society collapsed in Maharashtra's Pune city early on Sunday following heavy rains, fire brigade officials said.
No person was injured in the incident which occurred around 3 am in the city's Katraj area, they said.
"The residential society is located on Jambhulwadi Road in Katraj. The compound wall of the society collapsed onto the parking shed following incessant heavy rainfall. Several vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, were damaged," a fire official said.

Orange alert sounded for 2 districts in Kerala
Most parts of Kerala received widespread rain on Sunday, putting several areas across the state on orange and yellow alert.
The IMD issued orange alerts for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 6 and for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on July 7, while yellow alerts remained in force for several northern districts.

Portion of Ganga Expressway link road washed away
A portion of the road connecting the Kanpur-Lucknow National Highway with the Ganga Expressway in Unnao district was caved in after the first monsoon rain, with the washing away of the underlying soil.
According to officials on Sunday, the caving of a nearly seven-metre stretch of the link road near Bashiratganj in the Sonik area -- where it connects to the Ganga Expressway -- prompted repair work.
Residents alleged that adequate slope protection and soil-retention measures had not been provided along the road in accordance with prescribed standards, resulting in the collapse during the first monsoon rain.

Teen drowns in swollen river in Maharashtra, Man killed in balcony collapse
A 17-year-old boy drowned in a river, while a man was killed and two women sustained injuries after a portion of a balcony collapsed as torrential rains wreaked havoc in Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra on Sunday.
The boy, a resident of Gaibi Nagar, had gone to the riverbank with his friends to catch crabs when strong currents swept him away, a civic official said, adding that efforts are underway to trace his body.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said the monsoon is active in Gujarat and conditions are favourable for it to advance further into some more parts of the state as well as north Arabian Sea.
"Monsoon was active over Saurashtra-Kutch and normal over Gujarat region, with extremely heavy at isolated places in the districts of Saurashtra, namely Amreli and Bhavnagar," the IMD said in its evening forecast.
Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into some more parts of the north Arabian Sea and Gujarat, it added.
