Guwahati: As part of a statewide crackdown on illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, the Assam government has decided to stop issuing Aadhaar cards to those above the age of 18.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the Cabinet took the decision to ensure that illegal immigrants do not acquire the document.
"In exceptional cases, the district commissioner will have to send a proposal to the state government seeking permission to issue the card," he said at a press conference after chairing a Cabinet meeting here.
He also said that Aadhaar card issuance has reached a saturation point in the state.
"In some districts, it has crossed the 100 per cent mark, and we must ascertain who these people are who are obtaining the additional Aadhaar cards," he said.
Assam shares a 263-km-long international border with Bangladesh that runs through the districts of Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Sribhumi, and Cachar.
