Los Angeles: Crazy Rich Asians, one of the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedies at the North American box office in nearly a decade, is set to be adapted into a drama series.

The television adaptation will feature the film’s lead cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will also return in a recurring role, according to Deadline.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling books, the series has been in development at HBO for nearly two years. It brings together the film’s co-writer Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

Channing Dungey, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks, said the story had evolved from a bestselling novel into a successful film and would now reach television audiences.

“From a bestselling novel to a blockbuster film and now television, Crazy Rich Asians has solidified its place as one of the most beloved stories in popular culture,” Dungey said.

She added that Kwan had created a world combining glamour, humour and emotion, and welcomed Lim’s return to adapt the story for television. Dungey also expressed excitement about bringing back Wu, Golding, Chieng and Yeoh to reprise their roles.

The series will be executive produced by Lim through her production company 100 Tigers and Chu through Electric Somewhere. Kwan, Jacobson and Simpson will executive produce through Color Force, the company that developed and produced the film.

Other executive producers include Chloe Dan and Jeannine Tang for SK Global Entertainment, which co-financed the film; Emmy winner Naia Cucukov Richards through Lim’s 100 Tigers; and Emmy nominee Rose Lam.

The series is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
