Germany: A fire broke out at Adolf Hitler’s Kehlsteinhaus mountaintop retreat in Germany’s Bavaria region on Friday, German media reported.
Police suspect arson and have detained a man, though it is unclear whether he was involved in the blaze. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel in the area around Berchtesgaden in the southern region of Bavaria were battling the flames.
The Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest, sits about 1,830 metres above sea level near the town of Berchtesgaden. It was commissioned by the Nazi Party as a site for official and social events. Hitler is said to have rarely visited the site, which was completed in 1938.
