New Delhi: The Election Commission on Thursday announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu.

The poll roll revision exercise seeks to enroll eligible voters, particularly young and first-time electors, and facilitate advance applications from those who will become eligible on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027.

The draft electoral rolls will be published on November 30.

Final publication of electoral rolls will take place on January 21, 2027.

The Commission has directed chief secretaries of the respective States and Union Territories (UTs) to ensure adequate manpower and resources for the exercise.

How SSR differs from SIR

The major difference between SSR and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is that the former is an annual exercise primarily aimed at adding new eligible voters to the electoral rolls.

SSR, unlike SIR, does not remand verification of identity of already existing voters.

SIR, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive exercise that places burden of proof on electors to re-establish their eligibility to be included in the rolls.
